Peter helps municipal and private employers address traditional labor union and employment law matters both in and out of court. His labor union experience includes advising employers on merger and acquisition strategies, handling labor contract negotiations and interest and grievance arbitrations and mediations, and dealing with union strikes, boycotts, leafleting, and picketing. He also has experience as an arbitrator for both public and private sector clients. He has obtained favorable outcomes in cases of first impression in New York in obtaining an injunction against union noise-making under a theory of private nuisance tort and in defeating a disability claim on the basis of judicial estoppel due to a plaintiff’s prior Social Security disability application.
Peter defends against federal and state employment statutory and common claim claims in federal and state courts and before state agencies. His employment experience includes defending employers against whistleblower and discrimination claims, drafting employment and related restrictive covenant agreements, and handling litigation of such agreements. He also counsels employers on dispute avoidance strategies and on statutory compliance matters.
Peter serves clients across multiple business sectors, including the healthcare, beverage, retail, commercial real estate, entertainment, hospitality, and construction industries.
Peter has authored articles and lectured and appeared in print and television media on such topics as the effect of bankruptcy on labor relations, the scope of the federal laws concerning disability in professional sports, high-level executives as discrimination defendants, and mandatory arbitration of discrimination claims.
Peter is a U.S. Army Veteran. His military experience includes having served with Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, attached to the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), and with the 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
